What Screen Time does when an app helps you focus

Apple provides a set of tools that allow authorized apps to help people manage device use. Luma uses FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, and DeviceActivity.

Authorization starts with iOS

Before configuring restrictions, Luma must explain why it needs Screen Time access. Authorization is presented through a system interface and can be withdrawn in device settings.

FamilyControls lets you choose apps, categories, or websites through an iOS-protected picker. Luma works with opaque representations of that selection; it does not need to read what you type or do inside other apps.

What ManagedSettings does

When an authorized routine is active, ManagedSettings can present the system shield over configured selections. The exact experience depends on authorization, configuration, and the state of iOS.

This differs from a notification that merely asks you to close an app. It is also important to avoid absolute promises: a responsible website should not call an integration impossible to bypass without acknowledging the choices and limits provided by the system itself.

What DeviceActivity adds

DeviceActivity can schedule intervals and respond to events related to a routine. Luma uses it to connect your chosen schedule with the focus experience and local progress.

[!note] Privacy and control Luma is designed to request only necessary access. Screen Time authorization can be withdrawn, and the first routine does not require an account.

Two ways to hold a boundary

Luma proposes a flexible mode, with a breathing pause before temporary access, and a stricter mode for people who prefer not to include that exit during a routine. Final availability will be communicated inside the app and may depend on the plan and installed version.

The goal is not to promise perfect control. It is to create a useful pause between impulse and choice.
